Dan Domenech has spent twenty-six years in professional musical theater, working across nearly every discipline the field offers. His obsession began early: a high school production of Annie, then years at a community theater near his home in Farmingdale, Long Island, where by seventeen he was rehearsing one production on weeknights while performing another on weekends. 5 years later, he would book his first theather tour.
His professional credits include the national tour of Rent directed by Michael Greif, a Broadway run as Drew in Rock of Ages at the Helen Hayes Theater, the original Off-Broadway cast of Heathers: The Musical and its RIAA Gold-certified cast recording, and the Off-Broadway revival of Smokey Joe's Cafe, which received the 2019 Chita Rivera Award for Outstanding Ensemble. On screen he has worked for A24, Marvel, Starz, and Amazon; in concert, with more than twenty orchestras, including the Boston Symphony and the Houston Symphony. As a choreographer he has worked in film and broadcast, from Tropic Thunder to the Academy Awards, including associate to Marguerite Derricks on Adele's "Chasing Pavements," nominated for Best Choreography at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards.
That breadth informs how he leads. Having worked as an understudy, a leading man, a choreographer, and a director, he brings to a production a practical understanding of what each person in the room is responsible for and what they need to do their work well. His approach is built on preparation, clear communication, a positive presence under pressure, and the conviction that the central job of leadership is to make the work easier for everyone else involved. Two decades under Actors' Equity and SAG-AFTRA agreements, in union and non-union environments alike, have reinforced his belief that strong productions run on trust among artists, crews, and management.
New work has been a consistent focus. His directorial debut came in 2017 with the developmental production of the revised Heathers: The Musical, staged on Long Island ahead of the show's sold-out London premiere at The Other Palace. That portfolio also includes the world premiere of Sister Act at Pasadena Playhouse directed by Peter Schneider, script consultation on new musicals, and workshop productions with young companies of actors in New York. He has taught master classes at Harvard University alongside Nell Benjamin and Laurence O'Keefe, brings extensive experience from both sides of the audition table, and is equally comfortable addressing an audience from the stage or hosting an evening for patrons and supporters. He believes a theater does its best work when everyone in the building can bring their whole self to it.
Domenech lives in West Orange, New Jersey, with his wife. Devotion to institutions is a family inheritance: he is the son of a community development corporation teacher and the grandson of a Brooklyn organizer whose organization, founded in the 1950s, remains in operation today. He views a theater as a civic institution first and a business second, and believes it is best served by people who intend to stay and build.
